Two and a half hours. Nigerian clay. Your hands. Choose a sea creature or land animal and build it from nothing — guided from start to finish. Paint it, colour it, make it yours. Take it home the same day.

There is something specific about choosing an animal and deciding to build it with your hands. The decision happens quickly : octopus or turtle, lion or elephant, crab or whale  and then the clay is in front of you and the work begins.

Sculpt a Sea Creature or Animal is a two and a half hour hand-building session at Alali using Nigerian clay. No wheel. No molds. No templates. Guests work entirely by hand, guided throughout by an Alali instructor who walks each person through the techniques of pinching, coiling, smoothing, and joining : the same fundamental methods that have shaped clay on this continent for centuries.

The subject is the guest’s choice from the start. Sea creatures : octopus, sea turtle, crab, fish, whale, starfish, seahorse. Land animals : lion, elephant, giraffe, snake, lizard, bird. The instructor guides the construction while the creative decisions :  size, posture, expression, detail , belong entirely to the person making it.

Once the sculpture is built, guests paint and decorate it. Acrylic colour, surface patterns, markings, texture. The piece that leaves Alali is not raw clay waiting to become something. It is finished, painted, and personal:  an object that exists because of two and a half hours of attention and a specific choice made at the start of a session.

Nigerian clay air-dries naturally. Finished sculptures are ready to take home the same day.
