Roll. Cut. Shape. Join. Build a flat clay piece with your hands : a tray, a tile, a plate, or a decorative panel. No wheel. No kiln. Just clay, your instincts, and a finished object to take home

Most people think of pottery as something round. Something thrown on a wheel, pulled upward, centred by hands moving fast against spinning clay. Slab Pottery is something else entirely.

Here the clay starts flat. Guests roll it out, cut it into shapes, and join those shapes together to build something architectural : a small tray for a surface, a decorative tile for a wall, a plate, a panel. The slab technique is entirely hand-based and entirely unhurried. It rewards guests who want to think about what they are making as they make it.

At Alali, an instructor guides the session from the first roll to the final detail ; walking guests through how to work with the clay, how to join slabs cleanly, and how to add surface decoration if they choose. Carving, pressing, texturing, and freehand marking are all available. The piece the guest builds is their own creative decision from start to finish.

The results tend to feel more modern and more refined than hand-sculpted pottery. Guests who are drawn to clean lines, considered objects, and things that look good on a shelf or a wall find Slab Pottery to be the most satisfying session on the pottery menu.

Clay pieces are left to air-dry at Alali after the session and taken home the same day once ready. No kiln. No return visit required. Just a finished object that was not in the world before you arrived

All our pottery sessions are hand-built :  no wheel, no kiln wait. You work directly with the clay and take your finished piece home the same day.
